Stage Four – Yard blitz

Home > Get Ready Challenge

Topics covered include:

  • Simple yard tasks to reduce your fire risk
  • Where to find help if you can’t do the job yourself
  • What to do if there’s a fire hazard on neighbourhood properties

Is anyone else’s garden hidden under a layer of leaves and debris? To a firefighter, that debris is fuel, and after five years of wet summers the fuel load in the Blue Mountains has received a massive boost.

As we learnt in Stage One, nowhere in the Blue Mountains is safe from flying embers. They can travel many kilometres on strong winds, landing and igniting spot fires well ahead of the main fire front, sneaking into gutters and setting fire to unprepared houses. Embers are the cause of most property losses.

Your task in this stage is simple: make your yard a hostile environment for embers!

Let’s go play rakes and ladders!
