Knowing the location and direction of a bushfire – and where it’s likely to impact – is vital to the decisions that you will make next. A few elementary map reading skills will help you make safe decisions about where and when to go.
Stage Three – Emergency kit
In this super-important stage we’ll cover topics including:
- How to create and maintain a ready-for-anything emergency kit
- Packing a grab bag of essentials for each family member
- Making sure your fur friends don’t get forgotten
Living in the Blue Mountains we get to experience all the extremes of weather. As your friendly neighbourhood fire brigade, we’re prepared throughout the year to help our community – whether it be during fire, floods, storms or heavy snow (we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that one).
When it comes to preparing your home and family, it’s not that different. Being ready for an emergency situation is worthwhile at any time of year. A power cut in the middle of winter, or a branch smashing through your roof in the middle of the night? These might not have the life threatening impact of a fire, but can make it just as urgent to pack up and move at short notice.
With a bit of luck you may never have to use your Emergency Kit. But as they say, better to have and not need than to need and not have. Sort out your emergency kit now and you’ll be ready to respond, no matter what nature throws at you.
